Pete Geren joined the Department of Defense in September of 2001 to serve as Special Assistant to the Secretary of Defense with responsibilities in the areas of inter-agency initiatives, legislative affairs and special projects. He is representing the Secretary of Defense for the second lecture of the Melady Round at the Catholic Information Center on 12 February 2003 sponsored by the Knights of Columbus (Potomac Council). The lecture is titled: The Global War on Terrorism.
This lecture series is named in honor of Dr. Thomas P. Melady, former United States Ambassador to the Vatican. He delivered the Inaugural Lecture on January 8, 2003 and will make the concluding remarks at the 12 February lecture.
Prior to joining the Department of Defense, Geren was an attorney, businessman, and United States Congressman from Fort Worth, Texas.
From 1989 until his retirement in 1997, Geren was a member of the United States Congress, representing the Twelfth Congressional District of Texas for four terms. He was elected as a Democrat to the One Hundred First Congress, by special election, September 12, 1989, to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of James C. Wright, Jr.; reelected to the three succeeding Congresses and served from September 12, 1989, to January 3, 1997. He served on the Armed Services, Science & Technology and the Public Works and Transportation Committees during his tenure in the Congress.
Geren attended Georgia Institute of Technology, 1970-1973; B.A., University of Texas, 1974; J.D., University of Texas Law School, 1978; admitted to the Texas bar in 1978 and practiced in Houston, Tex., 1979-1981, and Fort Worth, 1981-1983; and served as executive assistant to United States Senator Lloyd M. Bentsen, 1983-1986.
He and his wife, Beckie, have three daughters, Tracy, Annie and Mary.
