William E May is the Michael J. McGivney Professor of Moral Theology at the John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family. The Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family is authorized by the Congregation for Catholic Education to grant ecclesiastical degrees.

It is established and governed by the special provisions indicated in the Apostolic Constitution Magnum Matrimonii (1982). The administrator of the John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family, incorporated in the District of Columbia

(1988) as the “Knights of Columbus Family Life Bureau, Inc.” It is licensed by the Education Licensure Commission of the District of Columbia. A longtime philosopher-friend of Karol Wojtyla once said that Wojtyla had always been occupied with understanding the human person in terms of love. The mission of the Pontifical John Paul II Institute, in a profound sense, begins here, in this abiding conviction of the Holy Father that love reveals the meaning of the person and, through the person, of all “flesh”the whole of creation The John Paul II Institute is devoted to the study of this truth about the human person in all of its dimensions: theological, philosophical, anthropological, and indeed cosmological-scientific. The Institute centers its study of the person in the community that is the original cell of human society: marriage and family Professor May is an internationally known theologian who has authored several books. For example, he is the coauthor of “Catholic Sexual Ethics”; the author of “An Introduction to Moral Theology”, and “Catholic Bioethics and the Gift of Human Life”. Dr. Mark S. Latkovic of the Sacred Heart Major Seminary wrote on the latter book: “With so much bioethical thinking supporting the “culture of death”, I can think of no better champion of a “culture of life” than Professor William E. May. Professor May has given us a book which is useful not only for its masterful summary of the moral magisterium on bioethics, but also for its treatment of such issues as contraception, artificial reproduction, the care of the dying, human experimentation, and the definition of death and organ transplants. This book is available at the Catholic Information Center. Professor May is a member of the Potomac Council of the Knights of Columbus.
